Fred
J Taylor – known to his friends simply as Fred J has been one of the
most respected and best
loved of angling writers for almost half a
century.
Along
with his brother Ken, and cousin Joe ‘the Taylor Brothers’ as they
were popularly known were responsible for many of the innovations that
lead to anglers all over the country catching more fish and bigger fish.
The lift method, which they used to make huge catches of Tench from Wotton Lakes, is still relevant today and their development of static
deadbaiting became a valuable addition to the pike fisher’s armoury.
Following his experiences of seeing maize used as a carp bait in
America, Fred was one of the first anglers to recognise the value of
sweetcorn as an excellent bait for Tench and carp in this country. His
writings about other techniques from across the Atlantic helped to
popularise lure fishing for predators and the use of lead-headed flies
for trout.
As
well as being a successful angler, one of Fred’s greatest abilities is
to write about his subject in a relaxed and easy style that is
informative, evocative and amusing.
In
addition to writing on fishing matters Fred has written extensively on
many other aspects of the countryside, in books, magazines and the
national press as well as appearing on television, where his outdoor
cooking skills have been ably demonstrated. |
